Diesel Powered Lift Trucksdiesel-landing 1

Diesel forklift trucks are one of the toughest workhorses in the materials handling world, being suited to a wide range of unit loads and designed to withstand the rigours of outdoor work.

Powered by a fuel that is both easy to get hold of and straightforward to use, diesel counterbalance forklifts like the Cat® Lift Trucks DP range perform well in harsh environments like those that are wet or dirty. Typical applications include loading and unloading goods vehicles, container stuffing and moving goods into or out of external storage areas, as well as transferring items from one site location to another – for example between two different production areas.

Unlike some other lift trucks, diesel counterbalance forklifts come in a very wide range of sizes and lift capacities, which makes them capable of carrying everything from a small pallet of bulk materials to individual components weighing several tonnes. The Cat Lift Truck DP range, for example, offers maximum lift capacities from 1.5 tonnes (DP15N) up to a hefty 16.0 tonnes (DP160N). Maximum lift heights are typically between 3m and 7m, depending on the kind of mast fitted, but while this can be useful in applications where trucks truly need to work at height – for example in outdoor racking – the emphasis in most applications will be on horizontal, rather than vertical movement.

Gas Powered Lift TruckLP Gas Powered Lift Trucks

Gas forklift trucks are an excellent alternative to both diesel and electric counterbalanced trucks for a wide range of materials handling applications, in many ways providing the best of both worlds without the main disadvantages of either.

Because gas is a much more environmentally-friendly fuel than diesel, gas powered forklifts like the Cat® Lift Trucks GP15-35N models can be used both indoors and outside. Like electric trucks, meanwhile, gas forklift trucks are clean and quiet yet do not require hours of recharging between shifts.

All of this means that gas powered forklifts can carry out just about any handling task, from working in warehouse racking to loading goods vehicles and from carrying goods between one site building and another to delivering a pallet of critical supplies to a production line.

Using liquefied petroleum (LP) gas, gas forklifts are also eminently suited to working at remote locations – all you need to do is take sufficient spare gas bottles with you to ensure your LP forklift can work for as long as necessary. Replacing an empty gas cylinder with a full one is a quick and straightforward procedure, allowing LP forklifts to work for any length of shift or any number of consecutive shifts.

Electric lift trucks are a quiet, environmentally friendly means of handling a wide range of unit loads including pallets, pallet boxes and stillages.

Designed primarily for use indoors, electric forklifts like the Cat® Lift Trucks EP16-20(C)PN range are the perfect choice for many handling operations, from lifting goods in and out of racking to moving goods at ground level around a site.

Being both quick and manoeuvrable (especially 3 wheel trucks such as the Cat Lift Trucks EP10-15KRT PAC and EP16-20(C)PNT, which have some very tight turning circles), electric trucks are often used in warehousing applications, where their typical maximum lift height of 5-6m makes them well suited to most standard wide aisle racking operations. Electric forklifts are often also found in production environments, bringing supplies or components to a production line or clearing waste packaging or other production by-products away.

Electric trucks can additionally be used to load or unload heavy goods vehicles, either from the rear of the vehicle (via a raised loading dock) or from the side (from ground level).
